Jenis-Jenis Pronouns
Rujukan dari (http://www.englishindo.com)
Pronoun umumnya menggantikan posisi noun yaitu sebagai subject, object
ataupun complement, begitu kira-kira penjelasan dari Frank Meskippun
begitu Frank (1972:20) mengatakan bahwa, "The traditional
definition of a pronoun as 'a word that takes the place of a noun' is
applicable to some types of pronouns but not to others." Ringkasnya,
pronouns tidak selamanya menggantikan posisi nouns saja. Namun sebelum
membahas lebih lanjut tentang fungsi-fungsi pronoun, baik sebagai
subject, object dan complement, alangkah baiknya jika kita membicarakan
tentang jenis-jenis pronoun yang jumlahnya tidak sedikit seperti dibawah
ini:
1. Personal Pronoun
Personal
pronouns generally take the place of nouns that refer to people,
although the third-person neutral pronoun it usually refers to things or
animals. Personal pronoun can have two cases: nominative and
subjective.
Personal pronoun
umumnya menggantikan posisi nouns yang menunjuk pada manusia, kecuali
it yang mengacu pada benda dan binatang. Personal pronoun memiliki dua
jenis: pertama, nominative case dan kedua, objective case. Nominative
case biasanya berfungsi sebagai subject atau subjective complement.
Sedang Objective case berfungsi sebagai object.

Lawan dari personal pronoun adalah impersonal pronoun, one.
2. Interrogative Pronoun
Pernahkah anda berpikir untuk memahami apa jenis parts of speech kata who dalam kalimat Tanya who are you? Kata who dalam pertanyaan who are you? Tersebut adalah interrogative pronoun. Cukup mudah bukan.
Frank (1972:21) mengatakan, “Interrogative pronouns"
introduce direct or indirect questions. There are three interrogative
pronouns—who (for persons), what (for things), and which (for choice
involving either persons or things).
Menurut
Frank, interrogative pronoun adalah kata ganti yang mengawali kalimat
pertanyaan langsung dan tidak langsung. Ada tiga jenis interrogative
pronouns, pertama who (untuk orang), what (untuk benda/binatang) dan
which (untuk pilihan mengenai orang maupun benda). Lihat contoh-contoh
berikut:
Direct question
|
Indirect question
|
Who answered the phone?
What did you eat?
Which have you bought?
|
He asked who had answered the phone
He asked me what I ate.
He asked me which I had bought.
|
Ketiga interrogative pronoun tersebut memiliki bentuk lain yaitu whoever, whatever, whichever yang berfungsi untuk membuat pertanyaan lebih umum.
3. Relative Pronoun
Frank
(1972:21) menjelaskan, “Relative pronouns refer to noun antecedents
which immediately precede them. They introduce adjective clauses in
which they serve as subjects or objects.
Menurut
Frank, relative pronoun mengacu pada noun antecedents yang langsung
mendahuluinya. Dalam hal ini relative pronoun mengawali adjective clause
dimana relative pronoun tadi berfungsi sebagai subject ataupun object
dari klausa terebut.
Relative pronoun yang paling umum adalah who, whom, that dan which. Contoh:

4. Demonstrative Pronouns
Demonstrative pronoun points out someone or something. The most common demonstrative pronouns are this (plural these) and that (plural those). This generally refers to what is near at hand, that to what is farther away. (Frank, 1972:22).
Demonstrative pronoun berfungsi menunjuk seseorang atau suatu benda. Demonstrative pronoun yang paling umum adalah this (bentuk pluralnya these) dan that (bentuk pluralnya those). This umumnya menunjuk seseorang/suatu benda yang dekat, sedang that menunjuk seseorang/sesuatu yang jauh. Contoh:
Singular
|
Plural
|
This is my book
That is your book
|
These are my books
Those are your books
|
Untuk lebih mudahnya, bisa menggunakan analogi disini dan disana (here and there), jika benda ataupun orang itu dekat berarti disini/here, maka menggunakan this/these. Namun jika jauh berarti disana/there, maka menggunakan that/those.
Keterangan:
Harap dibedakan antara demonstrative pronouns
dengan demonstrative adjective. Ketika setelah this, these, that dan
those tidak ada noun yang mengikutinya, maka kata-kata tersebut menjadi
demonstrative pronouns. Namun jika sebaliknya—ada noun setelah this,
these, that dan those—maka kata-kata penunjuk tersebut menjadi
demnnstrative adjective.

5. Possessive Pronouns

6. Reflexive Pronouns
The reflexive pronoun is a combination of –self with one of the personal pronouns or with the impersonal pronoun one.
The most common of the reflexive pronoun is as an object that ‘reflect
back’ to the subject; in other words, it has the same identity as the
subjects. (Frank, 1972:22).
Frank menjelaskan bahwa reflexive pronoun adalah sebuah kombinasi kata –self dengan salah satu bentuk personal pronoun atau impersonal pronoun one. Reflexive pronoun yang sangat umum berfungsi sebagai object yang memantul kembali pada subject; dengan kata lain, baik object maupun subject mempunyai identitas yang sama.

7. Reciprocal Pronoun
Like the reflexive pronoun, the reciprocal pronoun
has the same identity as the subject. The reciprocal pronoun indicates
that the individual members of a plural subject mutually react one on
the other. (Ibid)
Seperti
halnya reflexive pronoun, the reciprocal pronoun juga memiliki kesamaan
identitas dengan subject. Reciprocal pronoun mengindikasikan bahwa
anggota dari subject yang jamak secara individual bereaksi satu sama
lain. Jenis yang umum dari reciprocal pronoun ini adalah each other dan one another. Contoh:
They amused each other by telling stories = They amused themselves by telling stories.
Catatan dari Marcella Frank:
Each other digunakan untuk dua orang dan one another digunakan
untuk tiga orang atau lebih tidak pernah diteliti oleh pakar ahli.
Artinya, kedua-duanya bisa digunakan tanpa aturan yang jelas.
8. Indefinite Pronouns
Such pronouns refer to indefinite (usually unknown) persons or things, or to indefinite quantities. (Frank, 1972:23).
Indefinite pronouns
mengacu pada orang atau benda yang tak dikenal atau jumlah yang tak
diketahui berapa besarnya. Indefinite pronoun dibagi menjadi dua. Pertama, Indefinite person or things dan kedua, indefinite quantities.
